When I was 17, a boy I had grown up with and who was like an older brother to me was in a bad bike accident and nearly died. While he was in a coma, I was tasked with staying in his family’s home to care for their animals while they lived at the hospital in their own living nightmare. One night, desperate for solace and needing to get out of their house, I drove down the road until I found a little parking spot. When I walked down the path, I found the lakeshore. That was in May of 2003, and that place has remained “my spot at the lake” ever since.

Whenever I need to gain a sense of perspective, or whenever I need to get away from people so that I can breathe, this is my go-to spot. It never fails to make me feel so small, never fails to give me that sense of being a teeny tiny speck in the grand scheme of life.

This lake pebble is from “my spot”. Most of the lake pebbles I use are from “my spot”.

He lived...that boy from my youth. And his life is wonderful now.
